Introduction to the English Lakes country

“The English lakes country is a compact area with 16 lakes, of which Windermere, Ullswater and Derwentwater ar the principal, numerous mountain tarns and with the highest mountains in England in its midst. Four peaks, Scafell Pike, Scafell, Helvellyn and Skiddaw, rise above 3,000 feet and scores more are over 2,000 feet. The lovely Lakeland hills and dales inspired some of the finest poems in the English language. It is essentially an outdoor holiday area.

Although the summer is, naturally, the most popular time of the year, every lover of the open air will find each month has its own delight. There are walks among the beautiful dales, lakes and fells or rock climbing for those who prefer more strenuous exercise. The angler and the golfer will find sport in ideal surroundings; tennis and bowls are favorite games and there is also boating and bathing. Lakeland is a thousand square miles of wonderful holiday country.”
