Sparta was a prominent city-state in ancient Greece, located in the region of Laconia, in the south-eastern Peloponnese. On the other hand, Mystras is more recent and is a fortified town, close to Sparta, and famous for serving as the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea in the 14th and 15th centuries.
